Center Welcomes Retinal Imaging Expert from Milan
The Clinical Center of Innovation for Age-Related Macular Degeneration was honored to host Giovanni Staurenghi, M.D., an accomplished physician-scientist from Milan, for a lecture at the Retina Foundation of the Southwest on October 13, 2016. Dr. Staurenghi is one of the world’s experts in the field of retinal degeneration and renowned for his contribution to retinal imaging.
Dr. Staurenghi’s presentation focused on an exciting new non-invasive retinal imaging technology called OCT Angiography. The OCT-A allows retina specialists to see ultra-clear 3D images of the eye that are so detailed even the smallest blood vessels can be seen. This technology has the potential to be very helpful with the evaluation of the wet form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
During his visit he toured the cutting-edge facilities at the Retina Foundation and learned more about the Clinical Center of Innovation. Dr. Staurenghi was impressed by both the uniqueness of the Center’s initiative for AMD, as well as the clinical work being done at the Foundation. The Center collaborates with experts such as Dr. Staurenghi and his team in Italy, in an effort to advance macular degeneration research by finding better solutions for diagnosing and treating patients afflicted with the disease.
With partners like Dr. Staurenghi and his team, the Clinical Center of Innovation for AMD continues to be at forefront of emerging technologies, specifically in this case the field of retinal imaging, to advance our understanding of macular degeneration.
