The traditional medical research model can take 10+ years, cost $4 billion to bring one approved drug to patients and has only a 10% success rate. Our Patient-First Medici Model takes a different approach at the beginning of the process in order to get to clinical trials faster. It’s a more efficient, more effective and revolutionary approach that, if proven successful, can be applied to help diseases beyond AMD.
- The Center is a first-of-its-kind endeavor because of the unique collaboration between a world-class, agile and efficient research organization and a nationally-ranked, multi-disciplined private university focused on the actual process of innovation – RFSW and SMU. The Center developed the transformative Patient-First Medici Model of medical research, introducing engineering, arts and other disciplines to the medical discussion.
- Simply stated, we are going outside traditional approaches to solve clinical challenges specific to AMD using structured innovation. Through this model, engineers, scientists, artists, photographers, biologists, chemists and clinicians collectively create innovative ideas in diagnosing and treating AMD – all within a more efficient process that will bring those tools to clinical trials with less time and cost. We believe we are the only medical research program of its kind. Already, some of the ideas generated are being researched and tested, and prototypes have been developed.
- This revolutionary Center will also produce a thoroughly evaluated, recorded and metrics-based research process of innovation that can be used to find breakthroughs for other diseases.
